Built in 1662, this picturesque mosque is a historical landmark from the Mughal era. It’s located in the village of Arifail, Sarail sub-district, and its architectural style and techniques are quite remarkable. Because of its design, the mosque looks somewhat like the Taj Mahal. This 350-year-old mosque is a significant archaeological site. Currently, it’s declared a protected monument by the Department of Archaeology of Bangladesh.
This mosque is situated on the west side of a high platform in the village of ULChapara, south of Brahmanbaria city. The intricate carvings on the central dome, extending a few feet below its peak, are unlike those seen in any other mosque. There’s also a French inscription on the mosque.
The Bidyakut Sati Temple is located in the historically significant village of Bidyakut, Nabinagar sub-district. In the past, the practice of Sati was observed in Hindu society. A wife would be cremated alive on the funeral pyre of her deceased husband. This temple was built by Dewan Ram Manik, a member of the well-known Hindu Dewan family of Bidyakut. Ram Manik’s mother was the last woman to be subjected to Sati in the area.
Brahmanbaria is called the cultural capital of Bangladesh. Renowned musicians like Ustad Alauddin Khan, Ali Akbar Khan, and Bahadur Khan were born here. Their contributions to subcontinental classical music are immense. Brahmanbaria is also famous for puppetry. Bipin Pal from Krishnapur village, Nabinagar sub-district, is credited with introducing puppetry to the Indian subcontinent for the first time.
Among Brahmanbaria district’s famous sweets is Chhanamukhi, which is not very common in other parts of the country. Other popular sweets include Taler Bora and Rasmalai, made with palm sap.
Brahmanbaria is known for its handloom industry. The Titas Gas Field, discovered in 1962 and supplying gas since 1968, provides one-third of Bangladesh’s natural gas. The Ashuganj Power Plant is the second-largest power generation plant in the country. The Ashuganj Fertilizer Factory is one of the biggest producers of urea fertilizer in Bangladesh. Established in 1994, the Akhaura Land Port is one of the country’s most important land ports, facilitating exports of various goods to India. The Bangladesh Small and Cottage Industries Corporation (BISIC) established an industrial city here in 1985.
Popular sports in Brahmanbaria include cricket, football, and badminton. Traditional sports include boat racing, lathi khela (stick fighting), bull racing, and cockfighting. The Niaz Mohammad Stadium is the central sporting arena in Brahmanbaria district. Among the district’s famous athletes are cricketer Probir Sen, who played against Don Bradman, and former Bangladesh national cricket team captain Mohammad Ashraful.
Brahmanbaria district is connected by two highways: the Dhaka-Sylhet Highway, which is part of the Asian Highway Network, and the Cumilla-Sylhet Highway. The district has railway connections to Dhaka, Sylhet, Chittagong, and Mymensingh. The Akhaura Railway Junction is a major railway hub. The Titas and Meghna rivers are the primary means of water transport in Brahmanbaria district.
